# What is body doubling?

> Body doubling is working on a task while another person is present, in the room or on a call, whose presence alone makes it easier to start and stay on the task. It is widely used in the ADHD community.

The term comes from ADHD coaching. The "double" does not help with the task, supervise, or even talk much. They are simply there, doing their own thing, and for many people that is enough to get started on something they have been avoiding for days.

Nobody is entirely sure why it works. The leading explanations are mild social accountability (someone would notice if you stopped), a reduction in the loneliness of boring tasks, and the way another person's calm presence regulates your own attention. Whatever the mechanism, it is one of the most consistently recommended strategies for ADHD focus.

Body doubling used to require a roommate or a library. Now it happens on video calls, in "study with me" livestreams, and through apps that pair strangers for a focus session. The newest version is a text-based double: a friend or an AI that checks in when you start, again between sprints, and asks what you got done.

## How this relates to folk

Folk can be the double in your texts. Tell it "i'm starting laundry and the essay, stay with me" and it checks in every 20 minutes, asks what you finished, and keeps you company through the boring parts. It remembers what usually derails you and heads it off.

## FAQ

### Does body doubling only work for ADHD?

No. It was popularized in the ADHD community because the effect is so strong there, but most people focus better with a quiet presence nearby. It is why libraries and coffee shops work.

### Can an AI body double?

Partly. An AI cannot sit in the room, but it can do the check-in half of the job: start the session with you, ask what you are working on, ping you between sprints, and notice when you go quiet. For a lot of people that is the part that matters.
